Brain Change, Grief, and Transformational Coaching
Grief and trauma have a profound impact on the brain, often necessitating it to reorganize its neural pathways. These changes are deeply shaped by our relationships—with ourselves, others, and the environments we live in. When we experience loss, it alters how we emotionally respond and interact with the world. We are tasked with adapting to the absence of familiar energies, people, and dynamics. Emotional triggers like love, regret, guilt, and shame become key players in this adjustment process.
In transformational and nature-connected coaching, with children or adults in grief, the environment plays a crucial role. Shifting from a familiar setting—like a classroom or work environment—to a natural environment can assist in rewiring the brain, helping clients rely less on external validation and more on internal peace and self-inspiration.
Setting Intentions for Transformation
Working through grief involves embracing the wide range of emotions that come with it. A big part of my coaching involves helping clients explore how changes in their environment impact their brain and emotional state. Using mythic imagery, I guide clients through emotional ‘high and low roads,’ setting clear intentions for their transformation.
Setting an intention—whether it’s simple or complex—is essential. It’s about committing to a process that helps the brain create and reinforce new neural connections. Think of it like creating new pathways in your mind, similar to how you learn a new skill, such as driving. In my coaching processes, I introduce the idea that endless possibilities exist at any given moment. Grief places people on the threshold of change, and it’s through new habits or rituals, ceremonies, and intention-setting that we open doors to new beginnings.
Turning Intention into Action
Transformational and nature-connected coaching goes beyond setting intentions—it’s about helping clients put those intentions into practice. By understanding deeper needs, setting clear goals, and developing actionable plans, we create the foundation for real change. The concept of neuroplasticity—“neurons that fire together, wire together”—plays a big part in this. By repeating new behaviors and thoughts, clients form lasting patterns, just like learning any new habit.
As a coach, my role is to guide clients through this process, helping them shift from their current way of thinking to new, healthier pathways. I use techniques like mythic imagery and nature-connected practices to reinforce the changes they are making, using the calming and transformative power of the natural world to support deep healing.
